The biographical war film is based on true stories
In 2021, actor Sidharth Malhotra’s biographical war film ‘Shershaah’ was released on digital platform during the COVID lockdown. The film was based on Indian Army Captain Vikram Batra who died during the Kargil War. Shershaah received critical acclaim and is regarded as one of the best war films ever. Now, a similar film has been released in the Tamil language which has received critical acclaim and is regarded as one of the best biographical war films. The film is titled Amaran and it is based on Major Mukund Varadarajan of the Indian Army.
Major Mukund Varadarajan
Major Mukund Varadarajan was an Indian Army officer who lost his life in 2014. Major Mukund Varadarajan was a commissioned officer of the Rajput Regiment of the Indian Army.
During a counterterrorism operation in Jammu & Kashmir, India, Major Mukund Varadarajan lost his life.
Major Mukund Varadarajan was posthumously awarded the Ashok Chakra for his bravery. His wife received the Ashok Chakra from the President of India. Pranab Mukherjee in 2015.
Amaran
Amaran is a biopic movie based on the life of Major Mukund Varadarajan. The film shows his childhood, his adult life, his decision to join the army, his army life, his friends, his wife and kids, and his battle with the terrorists.
Amaran was released on 31st January 2024 during the Diwali festival. The film is adapted from Shiv Aroor’s book series India’s Most Fearless. Shiv Aroor is a journalist skilled in covering Indian Armed Forces news and defence news. He has written several books on Indian Armed Personnel of the Army, Air Force, and Navy who have lost their lives.
Amaran stars popular Tamil movie actor Sivakarthikeyan as Major Mukund Varadarajan and popular South film actress Sai Pallavi as his wife Indhu Rebecca Varghese. The film is directed by Rajkumar Periasamy and jointly produced by Tamil movie superstar Kamal Hassan. The film also stars veteran Hindi movie actor Rahul Bose as Colonel Amit Singh Dabas and Bhuvan Arora as an army officer.
Upon its release, Amaran received highly positive reviews and critical acclaim for its story, writing, direction, performance, background score, emotional depth, and action. One of the country’s biggest superstars Rajinikanth honoured the team of Amaran for the marvellous work. A special screening of the film was held in Delhi for army officials and their families.
Talking about the box office performance, Amaran has already beaten several Tamil films released in 2024. The film has grossed over 100 crores globally becoming a major commercial success. The film will be available on Netflix after its theatrical release.
