Akshay Kumar is one of the biggest actors in India. But in shocking turns and events, his last few films have failed badly at the box office. The films haven’t just failed but also harmed his brand value and popularity with everyone wondering what’s next for him.
Akshay Kumar made his debut in 1991 and delivered several box-office hits. But there was a time when he delivered ten consecutive flops at the box office and acquired Canadian citizenship to move to Canada and quit films. Though he acquired Canadian citizenship he never moved there.
Akshay Kumar kept working hard and collaborated with Priyadarshan for a comedy film titled Hera Pheri. The film also starred Paresh Rawal and Suniel Shetty. Hera Pheri is considered one of the best films ever made in India and happened to be a turning point in Akshay Kumar’s life. From 2002 to 2012, Akshay Kumar starred in several comedy hits such as Hera Pheri, Phir Hera Pheri, Mujhse Shaadi Karongi, Hey Baby, Housefull 1, Housefull 2, Bhagam Bhag, Singh Is King, Welcome, Garam Masala, Awara Pagal Deewana, Namaste London, Bhool Bhulaiya, Desi Boyz and De Dana Dan.
The actor had a great time by doing comedies but his career took off after 2012 and received widespread success until 2021. Between 2012-2021, he delivered consecutive box office successes such as Housefull 2, Rowdy Rathore, OMG – Oh My God, Khiladi 786, Special 26, Boss, Once Upon A Time In Mumbai Dobaara, Baby, Gabbar Is Back, Airlift, Housefull 3, Rustom, Jolly LLB 2, Toilet, Padman, 2.0 and Kesari.
Akshay Kumar had his best year in 2019 when he delivered three major commercially successful films such as Mission Mangal, Housefull 4, and Good Newwz. However, his career saw a major decline and Akshay Kumar is presently having the worst phase of his film career.
Post the COVID pandemic, Akshay Kumar starred in over ten films, and only film of his performed well at the box office. In 2021, Akshay Kumar starred in Rohit Shetty’s Sooryavanshi, an action film from Rohit Shetty’s cop universe. It was the first Indian film released after the COVID-19 pandemic and was a major commercial success. Owning to the COVID lockdown, Akshay Kumar opted to release his films Laxmi Bomb and Bell Bottom on OTT platforms. Both the films received mixed to negative reviews.
Following the success of Sooryavanshi, Akshay Kumar had several major releases from 2022 to 2024 but unfortunately, all his films failed badly at the box office. The films include Bachchan Pandey, Raksha Bandhan, Ram Sethu, Selfiee, Mission Raniganj, and Bade Miyan Chote Miyan.
Akshay Kumar’s first release of 2024 was Bade Miyan Chote Miyan. The film is directed by Sultan, Tiger Zinda Hai, and Bharat director Ali Abbas Zafar and also stars Tiger Shroff and Prithviraj Sukumaran alongside Akshay Kumar. The high-octane action film was made on a budget of over 300 crores. But the film failed miserably at the box office and even failed to collect 100 crores.
Now Akshay Kumar’s second and next release of 2024 is a film titled ‘Sarfira’. Sarfira is an official Hindi remake of the 2020 Tamil Film ‘Soorarai Pottru’ starring Suriya, Aparna Balamurali, and Paresh Rawal. The film is based on the life of G. R. Gopinath who founded a low-cast airline in India. Soorarai Pottru was released in 2020 on an OTT platform and received widespread critical acclaim. The film even won five awards at the 68th National Film Awards. The same director of Soorarai Pottru is directing the Hindi version titled Sarfira. Owning to the success of Soorarai Pottru and its story, Sarfira is expected to do well at the box office and might be Akshay Kumar’s comeback film. The trailer of Sarfira has been received well by the audience. However, the film somehow has to do at least 100 crore business in India to be considered a success.
Post Sarfira, Akshay Kumar will star in the films Khel Khel Mein and Sky Force. Khel Khel Mein is an official remake of a 2016 Italian film called Perfect Strangers. Perfect Strangers is a comedy thriller film that has been remade in over 20 languages. The Hindi remake is titled Khel Khel Mein and stars an ensemble cast of Akshay Kumar alongside Taapsee Pannu, Ammy Virk, Fardeen Khan, Vaani Kapoor, Pragya Jaiswal, Aditya Seal and Freddy Daruwala among others. The film is set to release on 15th August 2024.
Sky Force is Akshay Kumar’s final release of 2024 in the lead. Sky Force is an action thriller film based on true events. The film is based on India Pakistan air war of 1965 where the Indian Air Force attacked Pakistan’s Sargodha airbase. Alongside, the film also stars Veer Pahariya, Nimrat Kaur, Sara Ali Khan, Sharad Khelkar, and Suniel Shetty. The film is shot in the USA, UK, and India and is set to release on 2 October 2024.
After Khel Khel Mein and Sky Force, Akshay Kumar will reprise his role of inspector Sooryavanshi by making a special appearance in Rohit Shetty’s Diwali cop release Singham 3 from the cop universe. Akshay Kumar will also be seen doing a guest appearance in the Telugu fantasy film Kannappa. If the reports are to be believed, Akshay Kumar will essay Lord Shiva in Kannappa.
The actor will also be seen making a special appearance in a Marathi film titled ‘Vedat Marathe Veer Daudle Saat’. According to the reports, Akshay Kumar will essay on the role of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in Vedat Marathe Veer Daudle Saat.
Akshay Kumar has quite a few releases in 2025 that are expected to perform well at the box office. The film includes Jolly LLB 3, Welcome 3, and Housefull 5. Akshay Kumar is also expected to star in Hera Pheri 3 with Paresh Rawal and Suniel Shetty. Hera Pheri is one of the most awaited films in India. Upon its release and if well made, Hera Pheri could emerge as one of the highest-grossing Indian films ever and the most successful film for Akshay Kumar.
